Can ChatGPT find my small business website?
The short answer
Yes — if your pages are public and your site allows OpenAI's search crawler. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (they can still appear as navigational links). To help your site appear in those results, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges. Blocking GPTBot (training) is a separate choice and does not control search.
Search bot and training bot are different
OpenAI lists several user agents. The two that matter most for a small-business site:
- OAI-SearchBot — for ChatGPT search. Allow this if you want your pages considered for search answers.
- GPTBot — for crawling that may be used to train generative AI foundation models. Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use the site for that training purpose.
OpenAI says each setting is independent. You can allow OAI-SearchBot so customers can find you in ChatGPT search while disallowing GPTBot if you prefer not to be used for foundation-model training. Changes to robots.txt can take about 24 hours to take effect.
What “findable” actually requires
Allowing the crawler is necessary, but it isn't enough on its own. ChatGPT search still needs clear, public pages that answer real questions. In practice that means:
- A real website with unique pages for each service and town you serve — not only a Facebook page. A Facebook page alone gives you far less room to explain each service and town.
- Plain-language answers to what you do, where you work, and how to contact you, near the top of the page.
- Consistent name, address, phone, and hours that match your Google Business Profile. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence, and that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up (Tips to improve your local ranking).
- No accidental block in robots.txt, hosting firewall, or CDN rules that rejects OAI-SearchBot or OpenAI's published IP ranges.
We cover the broader idea of being cited by assistants in what answer engine optimization (AEO) is.
What we recommend checking this week
This is Garnet Web Works' practical checklist, not an OpenAI guarantee:
- Open your site's robots.txt file and look for OAI-SearchBot. If it is Disallowed, remove that block if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- Confirm key pages return HTTP 200 without a login wall.
- Make sure your homepage and service pages state the town you serve (Livingston, Lufkin, Huntsville, or wherever you actually work).
- Put a phone number and contact form where a phone user can reach them without hunting.
- Keep Google Business Profile hours and categories current; incomplete profiles hurt local visibility even when the website is fine. Our answer engine optimization service covers both the website and listing side.
No one can promise ChatGPT will cite any particular business. A blocked crawler or a vague site makes it much less likely.
How Garnet Web Works approaches this
Every site we build is meant to be readable by people and by search systems: mobile-first pages, separate pages for each service and area, structured data, and a lead form that emails you. Clients also get a GarnetRX login showing Google Search Console clicks, impressions, and the queries people used. That doesn't replace ChatGPT search, but it shows whether the same clear pages are being found in Google — which is usually where the work starts.
Your next step: if you're not sure whether assistants can see your site, request a free site review and we'll tell you what a crawler and a customer each see.
Frequently asked questions
Does allowing OAI-SearchBot mean my site will be used to train AI models?
Not by itself. OpenAI's docs separate OAI-SearchBot (search) from GPTBot (training). You can allow one and disallow the other.
Can I block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search?
Yes. OpenAI says the settings are independent. Search appearance is controlled through OAI-SearchBot.
Is a Google Business Profile enough for ChatGPT to recommend my business?
A Business Profile helps people find you on Google Maps and Search. ChatGPT search still needs crawlable website pages with clear facts about what you do and where you work.
How long after I update robots.txt will ChatGPT search see the change?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for robots.txt updates to take effect in its systems.
Do I need special schema so ChatGPT can find my site?
OpenAI's crawler docs focus on allowing OAI-SearchBot and not blocking its IPs. Clear, public pages matter more than exotic markup. Structured data still helps search engines understand your pages, which is why we include it on the sites we build.
