What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your website and business information easy for AI-powered answer engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants) to find, understand and quote. Where SEO aims for a spot in a list of links, AEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself.
How answer engines choose what to say
Answer engines search the web, read the pages they find, and summarise them. The pages they lean on tend to state facts plainly, answer the question near the top, and agree with what other sources say about the same business.
That's why a clear, well-structured page from a small local business can be quoted over a vague page from a bigger one.
What AEO work actually involves
- Writing an answer-first paragraph at the top of each important page.
- Adding schema.org structured data for your business, services, areas served and FAQs.
- Keeping your business name, phone, services and service area identical across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
- Making sure AI crawlers aren't blocked by your hosting or CDN, and publishing an /llms.txt summary.
- Building FAQ and guide content around the real questions customers ask you.
AEO vs SEO
They aren't competitors. Most of what helps a page rank in Google also helps it get quoted by an AI: accurate content, clear structure, speed and trust signals. AEO adds a stronger focus on direct answers, structured facts and consistency across the web.
